Transmission Replacement and your Options

So it’s time for a new transmission.  Those words can cause the strongest man or woman to stop in their tracks and shake uncontrollably.  If you have had to buy a new transmission before then you are fully aware of the cost involved.  You do, however, have some options so let’s take a look at them.

Yes, option one is buying a new transmission.  Depending on the make and model of your car or truck this can cost thousands of dollars.  We’re sorry, we wish there was an easier way to say that but there isn’t.

Option number two has you doing the work yourself; in other words, you rebuild the transmission.  What this requires is a heck of a lot of knowledge, the temperament of a saint and a whole lot of patience.  You will also need some basic tools and a place to do the work.  The first thing you need to know is any moron can take apart a transmission; it’s the rebuilding part that becomes a migraine-starter.  We know saving money is important in today’s economic landscape but seriously, rebuilding a transmission is a major undertaking if you don’t know what you are doing.

Option number three has you buying a used transmission, most likely from a salvage yard since saving money is an issue.  If you are dealing with a reputable salvage yard that guarantees their product and provides warranties for their replacement parts then this might be the route you want to take.  Of course, you still need to install that transmission but if you know someone handy in these matters then you can get by okay.

Finally you can buy a rebuilt transmission.  Of primary concern with this option is who rebuilt the transmission?  Are they well-known and are they reputable?  What is their track record?  Are they highly recommended by people in the industry?  Go to a mechanic and ask him who is the best at rebuilding transmissions?  If you get the same answer from several sources then you probably can feel pretty good about that person.

We hope this helps a little; we at PDQ transmission parts know it is traumatizing to have to buy a transmission.  After all, this is what we do.  If it is a transmission or a transmission part or hard part, it is our business.  Manual transmissions or automatic transmissions, they are all intricate and costly, so do your homework and make sure you can trust whoever you choose to supply that transmission for you.
